Canal and visiting guide

Discover the historic charm of Hatton Locks and plan your perfect canal-side day out. From scenic towpath walks and heritage engineering to warm treats at our cosy café, explore everything you need to know before visiting.

The 'Stairway to Heaven' and rich canal heritage

Affectionately known as the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ on the Grand Union Canal, our café sits at the top of the historic flight of 21 locks. Originally opening in 1799, the canal transported Black Country coal, limestone and goods between London and the West Midlands. Between 1932 and 1934, the Canal & River Trust widened and rebuilt the flight to accommodate larger 14ft barges. This remarkable feat of engineering remains a sight to behold. Our café was once the working stables, where hard-working horses and donkeys rested overnight after hauling narrowboats along the canal.

Today, ran by couple Kevin and Paula, the café offers a warm and welcoming place to pause, refuel and soak up the atmosphere of this remarkable waterside setting. Step inside and enjoy our nostalgic collection of antiques and bric-a-brac, then settle in with a cup of tea and a delicious selection of homemade cakes, all-day breakfasts and tempting treats.

We take pride in creating a relaxed and approachable atmosphere—the perfect place to have a chat, unwind and feel at home.

Helpful tips for your visit

The main visitor car park is located as you come in from the main road (Birmingham Road). To reach our café, cross over the bridge, turn right, and enjoy a scenic walk along the towpath to the top.

We have limited parking beside the café, reserved for staff and disabled visitors. We have indoor seating available and plenty more outside. There is a public toilet on site and a disabled toilet too (just ask staff inside for the key).

Please note that our opening hours are weather-dependent, and we close earlier during the winter months, so we recommend calling ahead. As a small but mighty team, we prepare everything fresh to order and appreciate your patience during busy, sunny periods, when waiting times may be longer.
